Hello ?
Today is going to demand a little bit more work than usual.
It's worth it because it will make you a better songwriter and musician but don’t sweat it if you can’t spare the time. You can always circle back to this prompt later ?
Write in a style of music you're not very familiar with.
— Step 1 (5 minutes) : choose a genre you'd like to learn a little bit more about here.
— Step 2 (10-20 minutes or more!) : actively listen to a few songs in that genre.
— Step 3 : start writing with that genre in mind.
Questions that will help you with steps 2 and 3.
- Is the music slow or fast?
- What kind of instruments are playing?
- Is there something common to the 3-4 songs you listened to?
- What kind of vibe are you getting? How can you replicate those feelings?
Ok, this one is a difficult one.
If it’s the first time you’re trying something like this, you'll probably be bad at it.
Don't worry though, you'll get better at it if you stick with it ??
In the meantime, the simple act of listening actively to new music will help you develop as a musician and songwriter.
Have fun with this!
I look forward to your work in the comments ?
Joyce
PS: Something to keep in mind ==> when you have no clue where to start, locking the drums and bass line give you a solid foundation to build on.
rap and dubstep aren’t my thing, but here’s a first attempt using Garageband

Great job Mikel ! Sounds convincing ! ?
No Input on my recent assignments do you?
Hey Mikel, doing my best ?
Trying to keep the prompts coming every day and going through the comments once every 24-48 hours.
I did try to listen to your assignments but at least 2 of the links you posted are broken. Might want to post again under the relevant prompt?
I tried writing in a style of music I have not written in; ska. The track can be found here; https://soundcloud.com/jeff-van-beek/explore/s-sVG0zr2vtv1
Very nice ! Definitely not the easiest style of music to write in, loving the fact that you keep stretching your comfort zone Jeff ?
Thanks again for listening and also providing these wonderful prompts.
